The Ideal Story
Introducing The Academy for Ideal Education
The Associates for Ideal Education (AIE) was incorporated June 5, 1981. Its stated purpose is to “provide for the educational needs of youth and adults through holistic methods and to establish and operate schools or programs to fulfill this purpose.” The program grew out of the vision of Paulette Jones Bell-Imaan, founder of the then three year-old Ideal Learning Center, a tutorial and enrichment after school and Saturday program. A part of AIE’s mission has always been to make its services available to all, regardless of their ability to pay.
In the summer of 1981, AIE created, designed and operated the L.I.F.T. Reading and Math Summer Day Camp, the first of its kind in the metropolitan area. Through dedication, hard work, innovation and great teaching, L.I.F.T. and the Ideal Learning Center grew into a well-known force in the quest for Ideal Education in the Washington D.C. community.
In 1991, Rev. Paulette Jones Bell-Imaan, with the assistance of the charter board: Karen Tibbs, Lorenzo Calender, II, Pamela Copeland and Taiwo Inman, expanded the Ideal Learning Center into a full-time, day school, the Ideal School of Washington (ISW), a program for students in grades pre-kindergarten to 6th grade. In order to meet the need for quality, specialized Ideal Education for special needs students, ISW started the Ideal Alternative School in 1994. In 1996, the Associates for Ideal Education assumed operation of the school and changed the name to the Academy for Ideal Education.
In 1999 the Associates for Ideal Education under the direction of Paulette Jones-Imaan developed a successful bid to open the Ideal Academy Public Charter School. IAPCS currently offers Ideal Education to more than three hundred students in northwest D.C.
By 2000, the Ideal Alternative School merged with the Academy for Ideal Education and developed into an inclusion high school, graduating its first 12th grade class.
The mission of the Academy for Ideal Education is to ensure that students actualize their full potential in mind, body and spirit through a balanced academic and affective education program. The goal is to empower students to excel academically, to achieve maximum self-sufficiency and personal fulfillment and to be self-actualized as competent, contributing citizens in a diverse, global society.
After thirty-nine years of bringing Ideal Education to Washington D.C. students The Ideal Educational system remains a place of vision, a place where developing the Ideal Person is our goal. The Academy for Ideal Education prepares the students of today to be successful in the world of tomorrow.
We Honor the Ideal in Each Person
The Academy for Ideal Education is dedicated to helping students live a state of higher consciousness. We believe that there is an ‘Ideal Person’ within every human being. This is not a new concept. This ‘ideal’ or ‘higher’ self is called Nommo in Dogon (African) cosmology. It is also called the super-mind and is sometimes referred to as cosmic consciousness.
When an individual reaches and begins to operate from this level of awareness, he or she is said to be enlightened, or to be in a state of enlightenment. Enlightened individuals are fully self-actualized. They are in complete harmony with the universe and their fellow human beings. They live a life that blesses every person, place, condition, and thing with which they come in contact. Truly, they are successful individuals.
